Your wisdom teeth, also referred to as our third set of molars, tend to cause pain and other dental problems as they develop and start to take up room in your jaw. Here at Dentistry With a Difference, our dentists often advise extraction to prevent further issues in your dental health. We offer gentle wisdom teeth extraction in Dunwoody, GA, and we’ve compiled the information you need to know about this dental procedure.
What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth removal refers to the surgical extraction of these problematic molars at the back of your jaw. Wisdom teeth usually erupt in adults between the ages of 17 and 25 and although they were necessary when our ancestors had to use more force to chew food, our diet over the last few centuries has caused our jaw to be smaller and thus there is less space for these late developing molars. Typically we have up to four wisdom teeth, but some people may have none at all..
When Do You Need a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
You may need your wisdom teeth removed if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Your wisdom teeth are growing incorrectly and stuck or impacted under your gums.
- Your wisdom teeth are erupting unevenly or crookedly.
- You are having pain in the back of your mouth.
- You have cavities or dental decay in one of your wisdom teeth.
- Dental X-rays show your wisdom teeth are on a path to cause pain and other problems so removal may be recommended to prevent issues.
How are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth extraction typically involves three processes:
- Before Surgery – Dr. Nordone or Dr. Oh will examine your wisdom teeth and take dental X-rays of them. At this time we will also go over the sedation options we have to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
- Surgery – On the day of the surgery, once you are comfortably relaxed under the sedation option decided upon, incisions are made in your gums to expose your wisdom teeth. After that, the molars and premolars will be carefully extracted from their sockets after being loosened. The area will be cleaned and stitched to prevent more bleeding.
- After Surgery – Our dental team will carefully go over post-op instructions and advise you on wound care, diet, medications (prescribed or OTC), and encourage you to get as much rest as you can.
